Massive Fire at Canadian Military Base During Training Kills 4 Soldiers, Injures 39

International Desk: Four Canadian soldiers have been killed and 39 others injured in a devastating fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, Canada. Nineteen of the injured personnel are reported to be in serious condition.

The fire broke out in a training area at around 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 17. Canada's Department of National Defence said the blaze started in dry grass and spread rapidly due to strong winds reaching speeds of up to 96 kilometres per hour.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the most devastating peacetime tragedies involving the military on Canadian soil.

Major-General Wade Rutland, commander of the Canadian Army's 1st Division, said the fire travelled approximately one kilometre in just 30 to 60 seconds, describing its spread as exceptionally rapid.

The four soldiers who died in the incident have been identified as Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Sean Farrell, Private Aidan Golding and Private Hayden Lykemark. All four served with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

The Department of National Defence said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials have ruled out terrorism as a cause of the incident. Approximately 50 investigators are involved in the investigation.

CFB Wainwright is located about 210 kilometres east of Edmonton and is one of Canada's major military training facilities.

The fire placed significant pressure on local hospitals, prompting authorities to transfer some injured personnel to hospitals in Edmonton for treatment.
